What started as a small newspaper in Australia in the 1920s has grown to comprise some of the world’s most iconic brands in media and information, thanks to the leadership, creativity and curiosity of Rupert Murdoch and his father, Sir Keith Murdoch.

1785

The Daily Universal Register, later renamed The Times, is launched in London.

1801-NYP

In New York City, Alexander Hamilton starts the New York Post, a four-page daily broadsheet, 600 circ, priced at $3.50/year.

HarperCollins Publishers

Brothers James and John Harper open the modest printing establishment of J. & J. Harper Printers, which will later become part of HarperCollins Publishers, in New York City.

1819-HCP

Chalmers & Collins Bookshop and Printing Works (which will later become part of HarperCollins) opens in Glasgow and prints its first book, The Christian and Civic Economy of Large Towns by Dr. Thomas Chalmers.听

1850-HC

Thomas Nelson Jr. begins to revolutionize printing when he perfects the rotary press. William Collins will introduce the new steam presses in 1853, allowing Collins and Sons to publish affordable editions of Shakespeare and The Pilgrim鈥檚 Progress.

1868-NewsUK

The Times begins using the new Walter Press, the first complete stereo rotary reel-fed perfector printing press in the world, designed by the company.

1889-DowJones

The first edition of The Wall Street Journal is published by founders Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser as a four-page afternoon newspaper sold for 2 cents.

1897-WSJ

The Dow Jones Ticker, a real-time newswire and fundamental source for news in the investment community, begins disseminating financial news.听

1904 -NewsUK

The Times inaugurates 鈥淎 Novel Plan of Newspaper Distribution,鈥 offering readers a chance to try a new home delivery service for one year at a 23% discount.听

1920-NYP

The New York Post establishes its roots in sports by reporting on the New York Yankees鈥 purchase of Babe Ruth in 1920.

1921-NCA

In Australia, Keith Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch鈥檚 father, becomes chief editor of Melbourne鈥檚 Herald. He will eventually expand the Herald Group鈥檚 business holdings to include the News Limited company of Australian newspapers.

1931-HCP

Pat and Bernard Zondervan start a religious publishing firm out of their mother鈥檚 farmhouse. Zondervan will be acquired in 1988 and combined with Christian publisher Thomas Nelson, acquired in 2012, to form HarperCollins Christian Publishing.

1932-NewsUK

The Times publishes a font called New Roman, the first typeface to be developed by a newspaper for its own use. It would become one of the most popular fonts in history and a standard on computers.

1939-NYP

Dorothy Schiff, nicknamed Dolly, becomes the most dynamic female newspaper publisher in New York. From 1939 until 1976, she owned and guided the New York Post, making the publication into a profitable tabloid.

1952-NCA

Rupert Murdoch inherits his father鈥檚 interests in Adelaide newspaper The News. In 1953, he will become editor and publisher of the paper and join the board of News Limited.

1958-HC

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. selects Harper & Brothers to publish Stride Toward Freedom, his memoir about the Montgomery bus boycott. In 1963, they will publish a collection of his most-requested sermons, Strength to Love.

1960-HC

J. B. Lippincott publishes the Pulitzer Prize-winning To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which would become one of the most influential books on race in America and go on to sell more than 40 million copies.

1960-NCA

News Limited purchases the NT News and makes its first investment in the Sydney market by purchasing the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror.听

1964-NCA

The Australian is launched on Wednesday, July 15. Page one of day one reads: 鈥淚n these pages you will find the impartial information and the independent thinking that are essential to the further advance of our country.鈥

1967-NewsUK

The Times鈥 policy of anonymity is overturned and bylines are used by principal staff correspondents.

1970-HarperCollins

Harlequin acquires Mills & Boon and distributes their books beyond bookstores and into supermarkets and drugstores, igniting a period of international growth that will see Harlequin become one of the world鈥檚 preeminent romance publishers.

1971-DowJones

Electronic delivery of Dow Jones Newswires is possible for the first time.

News UK

News UK embraces more sustainable printing practices as The Times becomes the first major newspaper in the world to be printed on TMP, thermomechanical pulp, saving 25% on wood.

In April 1983, the New York Post publishes what will become one of its most famous covers: 鈥淗eadless Body in Topless Bar.鈥澛

The Wall Street Journal launches its first full news website, Money & Investing Update, marking the beginning of its push toward digital transformation.

1995-Foxtel

In Australia, Foxtel is established in a venture between 爆料网oration and Telstra debuting with a 20-channel service. FOX SPORTS Australia, previously Premier Sports Network, launches in Sydney.

1996-TheTimes

The Times and The Sunday Times launch their own website, which will go behind a paywall in 2010.

1996-Realtor-1

Move Inc. and its subsidiaries begin operating realtor.com庐, one of the first websites to display property listings, on behalf of the National Association of REALTORS庐.

1996-NCA

SkyNews, Australia鈥檚 24/7 News Channel, is launched as the first Australian-dedicated television news channel.

1998 Foxtel

National Rugby League rights are acquired and games commence being aired on FOX SPORTS Australia.

2001-REA

News Limited enters Australia’s digital real estate market with an investment in realestate.com.au.

2010-Storyful

Storyful launches the first-ever Social Media Newswire for news and media.听

2013-NewsCorp

Foxtel Play (now known as Foxtel Now) launches, offering streaming services over multiple smart devices.

2022-Dow Jones

爆料网 completed the acquisitions of the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) and Base Chemicals (now Chemical Markets Analytics), further strengthening the burgeoning professional information business of Dow Jones.

2022-New York Post

The New York Post posted historic financial results in fiscal 2022, contributing positively to profitability, possibly for the first time since Alexander Hamilton founded the paper.
